Hayleigh

If she’d thought writing lines was bad, it was nothing compared to writing an apology letter while sitting on a hard wooden chair on a bare, freshly spanked bottom.

Zero stars. Do not recommend.

Shifting for the millionth time to find some semblance of comfort, she studied the words she’d managed so far.

Dear Vicky,

I’m really sorry I lied and got you in trouble. I don’t blame you if you don’t wanna be friends with me anymore, but I really hope you can forgive me.

What else was she supposed to say? Daddy hadn’t said how long the letter had to be, so maybe that was good enough? She glanced up from her spot at the dining room table to where he was in the kitchen, hard at work on lunch. Something with brussel sprouts, which she hated with a passion. He always said he was going to find a recipe she liked, but so far every one he’d tried just made her gag.

Nibbling on her bottom lip, she contemplated her options. Ask Daddy for help or sit on this stupid chair for the rest of forever.

“Daddy?”

Turning away from whatever he had on the stove while still stirring it, he smiled at her. “Yeah, jellybean?”

“How long do my letters have to be?”

“However long they need to be. That’s up to you.”

Great. That was no help at all.

Something on her face must have given her away, or maybe it was just Daddy’s intuition, but he held out the hand not currently stirring. “Why don’t you show me what you’ve written so far, and we can talk about it.”

Letter in hand, she slid off the chair and made her way into the kitchen to give it to him. Thankfully he’d let her take her pajama bottoms all the way off, so she didn’t have to do the naughty girl shuffle the whole way.

Daddy scanned the letter quickly, his smile turning to a frown as he read.

“Hayleigh, you did not get Vicky in trouble. Vicky got herself in trouble by being rude.”

“But everything happened because I lied to her and tricked her into breaking all the rules. So, it’s my fault.”

“That’s not how this works, baby, and you know it. Vicky’s actions are her responsibility, just like your actions are your responsibility. It wasn’t nice of you to lie, because friends shouldn’t lie to each other. But her getting in trouble is not your fault. Okay?”

“Okay, Daddy.”

In some distant part of her mind, she recognized he was talking to her like a child who was just learning the concepts of right and wrong. And maybe if she hadn’t been so deep in her Little space, and feeling very much like a sad little girl, she might have been embarrassed by it.

But as things stood just then, she simply felt warm inside, and her heart was a little lighter when she made her way back to the table to start again.

Dear Vicky,

I’m really sorry I lied to you and tricked you into breaking the rules. I should have been honest about everything and let you decide what you wanted to do.
